3-Day Carvoeiro Itinerary: Sea Caves, Golden Cliffs & Algarve Adventures

The Algarve has a way of stealing your heart. In Carvoeiro, whitewashed homes spill down to a golden crescent of sand, dramatic cliffs guard the coast, and the sea hides secrets — like the famous Benagil Cave — just waiting to be explored. We made this charming village our base for three days, mixing in visits to Lagos, Falesia Beach, while enjoying the comfort of our stay at Tivoli Carvoeiro, perched high above the Atlantic.

Where We Stayed – Tivoli Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro, whitewashed homes spill down dramatic cliffs, and the coast hides so many secrets. The main beach, Praia de Carvoeiro, is a sheltered cove with golden sand and crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

If Carvoeiro is beautiful, the Tivoli Carvoeiro elevates it to breathtaking. Built into the cliffs, every room seems to offer views of the turquoise sea. Mornings began with a breakfast buffet overlooking the coast, and evenings ended with sunset cocktails at Sky Bar Carvoeiro, where the horizon blushed into the ocean.

The pool tempted us daily, but the hotel’s central location also made it easy to wander down into town or along the cliffside trails. The hotel’s buggy can take you into town or down to the town’s beach.

Day 1 – Carvoeiro & the Benagil Caves

Our first morning was devoted to Carvoeiro itself. We strolled along the Carvoeiro Boardwalk, a wooden path that hugs the cliffs, offering uninterrupted ocean views and access to Algar Seco, a labyrinth of caves, blowholes, and rock pools shaped by centuries of Atlantic waves.

By mid-morning, we joined a boat trip to the Benagil Caves, the Algarve’s most photographed natural wonder. Our small boat slipped into grottoes where the sunlight danced on the water, and we marveled many coves and caves before we even got to Benagil’s dramatic dome. The sandy chamber lit by a circular opening in its roof was a sight to see. These hidden coves you’d never see from land.

We spent a little time on the Praia de Carvoeiro beach before heading to a lovely lunch of cold gazpacho and coffee at a Cafe in Carvoeiro. We spent the afternoon relaxing at Tivoli’s pool before walking into town for dinner.

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail and Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha is considered to be one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches. It is one of the best hidden beaches in Carvoeiro. There is a small parking lot there, and from the panoramic point, you can go down to the beach. But on top of the cliffs is a walking trail, known as the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.

Stretching approximately 6 km between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, the seven hanging valleys trail winds along the edge of the limestone cliffs, providing panoramic views of the sparkling Atlantic Ocean below.

Along the way, you encounter the trail’s namesake hanging valleys, formed by natural erosion and adorned with diverse flora. This well-marked path invites you to explore secluded beaches, picturesque rock formations, and even a historic lighthouse at Alfanzina.

The moderate difficulty of the trail makes it accessible to most visitors, and it can be completed in around 3-4 hours, depending on your pace. This is by no means a challenging trail, but more of a relaxed walk on the cliffs. Don’t miss hiking the Seven Hanging Valleys trail in Carvoeiro!

By the end of the trail, you will be on the on top of the famous Benagil Cave. However, if you want to explore the cave, the only way is by boat. You can do that by walking to the end of the trail, which ends in Benagil town. There, you will find guides that take you on kayak tours, or you can rent a kayak for yourself.

Day 2 – Lagos & Ponta da Piedade

The next morning, we set off for Lagos, a town rich in both history and scenery. The drive took us through cobbled streets, tiled houses and lively squares before leading us to Lagos.

We lingered on Praia do Camilo, its golden sand reached by a long staircase. Once down you can cool off with a quick swim. Then we went to our next spot…

Ponta da Piedade, was everything I imaged and more— golden cliffs plunge into emerald waters with sea stacks poping up everywhere. We took the wooden stair down to see the arches and water upclose. Ponta da Piedade often shows up as one of the top places to visit in the Algarve.

As you get to the parking lot, you might not think much of the place but once you start walking on the dirt road towards the lighthouse, you will be mesmerized by the striking rock formations, turquoise waters, and stunning views of the surrounding coastline.

The towering limestone cliffs, weathered into fascinating shapes and arches through centuries of erosion.

It was getting closer to golden hour, so we walked up to a short cliff-top, and watched the sunset (featured photo on the top of the post and one of highlights of our trip to Algarve). There is a series of scenic trails along the cliff tops that offer numerous viewpoints to take in the panoramic vistas and admire the unique formations below.

Evening back in Carvoeiro meant one thing: sunset at Sky Bar, the Tivoli’s open-air terrace, where live music floated on the sea breeze.

Day 3 – Falesia Beach, a turquoise stunner

On our final day, we headed east to Falesia Beach, a six-kilometer stretch framed by dramatic red-and-orange cliffs. Praia da Falésia is rated not just one of the top beaches in Portugal but listed as one of top 10 beaches in the world. The soft sand, gentle waves, and sheer space make it ideal for long beach walks. A quick cliff-top trail rewarded us with spectacular views over the layered cliffs and the Atlantic beyond.

Praia da Falesia, Algarve

Albufeira and Portimão and two of the Algarve’s main hubs. The main attraction in Portimão is Praia da Rocha, one of the Algarve’s most iconic beaches. This vast stretch of golden sand is backed by striking cliffs and offers everything from sunbathing and watersports to beach bars and nightlife.

Albufeira has more options for luxury stays and beach resorts (like this beachfront luxe hotel) compared to the sleepy little fishing village of Carvoeiro, and you are closer to the beautiful turquoise waters at Praia da Falésia.

In the afternoon, you can continue to Faro, the Algarve’s capital. Faro’s walled old town offers cobbled streets, charming squares, where you can visit Arco da Vila, the cathedral, and sip coffee at a quiet café before making the drive back to Carvoeiro for dinner.

As for us, we continued to Lisbon, the capital city, for a couple of days before heading home to Dallas.
