One of my favorite experiences when visiting Whitefish, Montana was seeing the Glacier backcountry from a float plane. We jumped aboard a small Cessna 180 for an unforgettable flying experience, aerial views, and an epic sunset! Makes sure to add Glacier Backcountry Flying Experience to your itinerary when visiting Whitefish Montana.

We arrived at the marina at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake to meet our pilot for our float plane tour. We were on a scenic Glimpse of Glacier Tour, a one hour tour that took us around the scenic Upper Flathead Basin, Valley and Glacier Backcountry. We could see the magnificent peaks of the mountain ranges near Glacier National Park. We cruised around a bit before catching sight of the sunset reflecting off the Whitefish lake.

Our pilot was Jeff Scholl who has a helicopter drone company in addition to his aviation career. When he is not flying planes in the backcountry he is flying his drone taking pictures of the valley and the mountains for his company Quadrocopters.

The takeoff from the water was pretty smooth and once we were airborne, the views were stunning. I have never been afraid of small planes and have been on a floatplane in Victoria Harbour before and several small planes during our trip to Africa. But the sunset and the mountain views of the Glacier Backcountry Flying in Whitefish Montana was magical! Here are some photos to show what I mean…
