Best View of Table Mountain and Tajness at Taj Cape Town, A Review

Taj Hotel always brings back nostalgic memories of home for me.  Taj chain of hotels embodies a unique ‘Tajness’ for me and it not just the five-star service or superb property locations, it is almost a feeling of home.  When they were many choices for hotels in Cape Town, we didn’t have to think too much or do any research or any read review before booking Taj Cape Town Hotel for our week stay when we were in South Africa.

A Review of Taj Cape Town in South Africa

Location and History of Taj Cape Town

The hotel captures the history and spirit of Cape Town’s inner city with all the opulence and exoticism of the East. The hotel has seen many of the epochal events in South Africa’s history. The elegant structure is a perfect synthesis between what were originally the Reserve Bank and Board of Executives (BoE) buildings, and a modern tower, combines the legacy of a bygone era with the luxury of the new.  For me the highlight was the crisp morning views of Table Mountain from the balcony.  Sipping morning coffee while taking in the view of Signal Hill and the majestic Table Mountain was an everyday affair before we headed out to explore the city.  A cloud cover would appear later at the top of the mountain making it look as though there was table cloth on top of Table Mountain.

Suites at Taj Cape Town are perfect for families

We had the two bedroom tower suite with a big balcony that opened to views of Table Mountain.  The suite was spacious with a living room and dining area and two bedrooms along with two bathrooms.  Posturepedic mattresses were lush with nice linens and pillows. Housekeeping service was spot on, they made the beds and left us waters every night.  The pictures above are just my poor attempt at making the bed for a photo before we left.  There were plush bathrobes, slippers and Molton Brown bath amenities in the well fitted bathrooms.  We were conscious of not wasting water since water is scarce in Cape Town even though we never had any shortage of water during our stay at the Taj.

The Food at Taj Cape Town

Food in Taj had an Indian touch just as we had expected. With the best Indian fine dining offering in the city, the Bombay Brasserie’s Indian chefs cook up some great Indian fare. For more relaxed dining, there’s the multi-cuisine Mint, while afternoon tea and the breakfast buffet are served in the sky-lit lobby.  Twankey Bar serves up a selection of cocktails.

Complimentary breakfast was included in our rate and there were cocktails and 24-hour tea-coffee available at the Taj Club Lounge.  While there were a couple of Indian dishes in the breakfast buffet, we could also request for some fresh parathas that came with a side of dhal, pickles and yogurt.

Amenities at Taj Cape Town

We were welcomed with a complimentary bottle of premium South African wine, fresh fruits, flowers and chocolates when we checked-in. Other hotel amenities include a fully equipped gym, a cigar lounge, a plush Taj Club floor, art gallery, library, indoor pool and the Jiva Wellness Spa, where guests can get treatments that are inspired by age-old Eastern wellness philosophies. While we never had time for it kids can also request Sony Playstation, Xbox & Nintendo Wii for some game time. There is 24-hour laundry service with a complimentary one piece of ironing per stay which we availed 🙂

Activities near Taj Cape Town

There is plenty to do within walking distance to the Hotel.  It is perfectly positioned to immerse yourself in the energy of the city. Opening onto the bustling St George’s Mall, it’s nearby many of Cape Town’s foremost attractions and foodie destinations, along with a multitude of historical hot spots, galleries and boutiques.  We walked over to the Green Market to get some souvenirs and beads and then to the colorful Bo-kaap area.  Signal hill and Table mountain were a short drive away.

We had arranged for private tours with Star Travel Cape Town, who picked us up to take us to Boulders Beach, Chapman’s peak drive and other spots in Cape Town, more about that soon (Muizenberg was a favorite though). Zeitz MOCCA The Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is another place I loved. We also did a short getaway to the Cape winelands and stayed in Mont Rochelle Franschhoek for a couple of days.

Best place to stay in Cape Town
It was coffee, me and the mountain, every morning!

Growing up in Chennai which by the way will always be Madras for me, we used to visit the cafe at Taj Coromandel Chennai for coffee and black forest cake. We would stop at Taj Fisherman’s Cove before heading to Mahabalipuram for a day trip.  See our 9 reasons why we loved our stay at Taj property in the Maldives as well. So there you go… this is why we think Taj Cape Town is perfect for families visiting Cape Town South Africa.

Will share more about our favorite sights and must do things around Cape Town and the different hikes Miss Teen did, cafes and hot spots she frequented while she was on her 5 week internship there soon!
