Some journeys aren’t just about reaching the destination — they’re about savoring every moment along the way. Our day aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham train from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu was one of those unforgettable experiences, where luxury met adventure in the heart of the Andes.

WHAT IS IN THIS POST
Waking Up in the Sacred Valley
The morning began at our Belmond hideaway in the Sacred Valley, where the first light spilled over terraced hillsides and the sound of the Urubamba River whispered outside our window. We lingered over a leisurely breakfast, knowing we had no rush — the train station was just minutes away.

A short walk brought us to the platform, where the gleaming blue-and-gold carriages of the Hiram Bingham awaited like a scene from a vintage travel postcard. The staff greeted us with warm smiles and a welcome cocktail, setting the tone for the day ahead.
Rolling Through the Andes
From the moment we stepped inside, it was like being transported to a golden age of travel — polished wood, brass details, crisp white linens, and plush armchairs that invited you to sink in and simply watch the Sacred Valley glide past.

The train traced the path of the Urubamba River, past patchwork fields, tiny villages, and dramatic mountains that rose like sentinels on either side. In the bar car, a live band played Andean folk tunes, their melodies blending with the rhythmic sway of the train.

Fine Dining on the Rails
Midway through the journey, the dining car became our gourmet haven. Each course celebrated Peruvian flavors — fresh trout, grilled cauliflower, quinoa, native herbs, and decadent desserts— paired with generous pours of South American wines. It was indulgent, yet unhurried, the kind of meal where you savor each bite as much as the scenery.

Arrival at Machu Picchu
As we drew closer to Aguas Calientes, the landscape transformed — the peaks became jagged, the air warmer, the jungle thicker. The anticipation built with every turn until, finally, we stepped off the train into the lush cloud forest.
A short and windy bus ride later, Machu Picchu revealed itself, shrouded in its signature veil of mist. Standing there, we realized the train had been more than a way to get here — it had been an experience in its own right, one that made arriving at the Incan citadel feel even more special.
The best way to get to Machu Picchu in luxury!
Was the Hiram Bingham Train Worth It?
Sure, there are simpler ways to reach Machu Picchu. But traveling aboard the Belmond Hiram Bingham transforms the journey into an event — a celebration of food, music, scenery, and impeccable service. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime way to approach one of the world’s most awe-inspiring destinations.

What I’ll Never Forget
It’s funny — when I think back on that day, my mind doesn’t just jump to the first sight of Machu Picchu. I remember the sparkle of the champagne glass in the morning sun. I remember leaning out from the open car, the wind carrying the scent of eucalyptus and wildflowers. I remember the music in the bar car, the laughter between strangers who felt like friends by the end of the trip.

And I remember the feeling — that rare, heady mix of gratitude and disbelief that you are right here, right now, experiencing something truly extraordinary.

This was also our last Spring Break trip with the kids, who are young adults now. They will have jobs and vacation days to worry about by this time next year. We are very fortunate to have made so many lovely memories with them these past several years!
