Chamonix leaves you speechless with its scenery.
Nestled in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak, Chamonix is one of the most breathtaking places we visited in France. Towering mountains rise dramatically above the valley floor, glaciers cling to jagged peaks, and every direction seems to reveal another postcard-worthy view.
Whether you’re an avid hiker, a photographer, or simply someone who appreciates beautiful landscapes, Chamonix deserves a spot on your France itinerary.
If you only have one day in Chamonix, here’s how to make the most of it.

Why Visit Chamonix?
While many visitors come for skiing in winter or hiking in summer, you don’t need to be an outdoor enthusiast to appreciate Chamonix.
The scenery alone is worth the trip.
Unlike many mountain towns where the landscape gradually unfolds, Chamonix immediately surrounds you with towering peaks. The scale of the Alps here feels almost overwhelming, in the best possible way.
Aiguille du Midi is the highest cable car station in France. It get you as close as you can get to the Mont Blanc without climbing it. At 3,842 meters (12,605 ft), the views from here are absolutely breathtaking.
It’s one of those rare places where you find yourself stopping every few minutes simply to admire the view.
Morning: Ride the Aiguille du Midi Cable Car
If there is one experience that defines Chamonix, it is the journey to Aiguille du Midi.
The cable car carries visitors from the valley floor to an altitude of over 12,600 feet (3,842 meters), placing you remarkably close to the summit of Mont Blanc.
The ride itself is unforgettable.
As the cabins climb higher, forests give way to rocky peaks, glaciers, and snowfields stretching across the horizon.
At the top, panoramic viewing platforms offer some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Europe.
On a clear day, you can see into France, Switzerland, and Italy.

Step Into the Sky
Once you get there there are several viewing platforms here and a few stairs that takes you to the interesting viewing areas and structures.
One of the most popular attractions at the summit is the glass viewing platform known as Step Into the Void.
Standing inside a glass box suspended high above the valley below is both exhilarating and slightly terrifying.
Even if heights aren’t your favorite thing, the views are unforgettable.
Important Tip
Weather conditions can change quickly in the Alps. Book tickets in advance and check forecasts before your visit.
During the busy season, the first gondola from Chamonix to Plan de l’Aiguille has to be reserved online in advance.
Plan de l’Aiguille
Aiguille du Midi is reached from Chamonix via a journey that involves two cable cars. The first cable car takes you to the middle station, Plan de l’Aiguille, and the second one to the top.
Plan de l’Aiguille is the middle cable car station between Chamonix and Aiguille du Midi. You will pass it on your way up, but it’s best to go to the top first and explore here on the way down.
You have a few options here. Take a quick walk around, enjoy the views, and then go down to Chamonix by cable car.
Or go on a short hike to a small mountain lake, Lac Bleu. Allow for 15-20 minutes each way. Then take the cable car to Chamonix.
Hike to Mer de Glace. This works if you have 2 days in Chamonix. The hike should take about 3 hours, visit the attractions there and then take the Montenvers Train back to Chamonix town.
So much of the landscape here reminded us of of our trip to Dolomites.

Mid-Morning: Explore Chamonix Village
After returning from Aiguille du Midi, spend some time wandering through Chamonix’s charming town center.
Unlike many resort towns, Chamonix has maintained a traditional Alpine character.
You’ll find:
- Flower-filled streets
- Historic buildings
- Outdoor cafés
- Boutique shops
- Mountain-view plazas
The pedestrian-friendly center makes it easy to explore at a relaxed pace.
Everywhere you look, Mont Blanc dominates the skyline.
Lunch with a Mountain View
One of the simple pleasures of visiting Chamonix is enjoying a leisurely meal surrounded by the Alps.
Choose a terrace restaurant and settle in for lunch while watching paragliders drift through the valley.
Local specialties include:
- Tartiflette
- Raclette
- Fondue
- Charcuterie boards
- Alpine cheeses
The hearty mountain cuisine feels particularly satisfying after a morning in the high Alps.
Afternoon: Visit the Mer de Glace
No visit to Chamonix is complete without seeing the famous Mer de Glace.
Translated as “Sea of Ice,” this glacier is the largest in France and has been attracting visitors for centuries.
To reach it, take the historic Montenvers Railway, a scenic cogwheel train that climbs through forests and mountain slopes above the valley.
The journey itself is part of the experience.
As the train ascends, spectacular views open across the Chamonix Valley and surrounding peaks.
Explore the Glacier Area
Upon arrival, you’ll find:
- Panoramic viewpoints
- The Glaciorium exhibition
- Ice cave (when accessible)
- Glacier observation areas
Seeing the glacier up close is both fascinating and sobering, offering a glimpse into the power of nature and the visible effects of climate change.

Alpine Coaster at the Chamonix Amusement Park
A short walk from the Montenvers Train Station in Chamonix, you will find the Chamonix Amusement Park. It’s a popular thing to do in Chamonix for families with young kids. Reminds us of our visit to Vail, Colorado.

Stroll Along the Arve River
Back in town, spend some time walking along the Arve River.
The river winds through Chamonix, providing beautiful views of the surrounding peaks.
This is one of the best places for photography, particularly in the late afternoon when the changing light illuminates the mountains.
The combination of rushing water, alpine architecture, and snow-capped peaks creates a scene that feels quintessentially Alpine.
Evening: Mont Blanc at Sunset
As the day winds down, find a quiet spot to admire Mont Blanc.
The changing evening light often paints the mountains in shades of pink, gold, and orange.
Locals call this phenomenon “alpenglow,” and it transforms the landscape into something truly magical.
After a full day of exploring, it’s the perfect way to end your time in Chamonix.

If your schedule allows, spending a night in Chamonix lets you experience the mountains during the quieter early morning and evening hours.
In the Town Center
Ideal for restaurants, shopping, and easy access to cable cars and trains.
Luxury Mountain Retreats
Several hotels offer spectacular mountain views, spa facilities, and balconies overlooking Mont Blanc.
Family-Friendly Options
Many accommodations cater to families, offering larger rooms and easy access to hiking trails and activities.
Where to get the Tickets
If you have just one day, get the individual tickets linked above and follow Chamonix day trip itinerary as described here. The round-trip tickets for Aiguille du Midi cable car or the Montenvers Train works great for a short trip.
If you have a 2 or more days in Chamonix (lucky you!) you can buy a Mont Blanc MultiPass for a day or multiple days.
What our 1 day in Chamonix looked like
9 am: Cable car from Chamonix to Aiguille du Midi.
10 am: Visit Aiguille du Midi.
Noon: Cable car to Plan de l’Aiguille and a short hike.
1 pm: Cable car down to Chamonix, Lunch.
2:30 pm: Montenvers Train.
3 pm: Visit Mer de Glace.
4 pm: Train back to Chamonix.
Optional: Stay for sunset or try the Alpine Coaster
Keep in mind that cable car tickets have to be reserved for a specific time slot!
How to Get to Chamonix
From Geneva
Chamonix is approximately 90 minutes by car from Geneva Airport, making it one of the easiest Alpine destinations to reach.
Shuttle services run frequently between Geneva and Chamonix.
From Annecy
The drive takes roughly 1.5 hours, making it easy to combine Annecy and Chamonix in a single trip.
By Car
Having a car provides flexibility for exploring nearby mountain villages and scenic viewpoints.
Is One Day in Chamonix Enough?
One day is enough to experience the highlights of Chamonix.
You’ll have time to ride the Aiguille du Midi cable car, explore the village, visit the Mer de Glace, and soak in some of the most spectacular scenery in France.
However, Chamonix is one of those destinations where an extra day… or three… would never go to waste 🙂
There are countless hiking trails, mountain excursions, scenic railways, and viewpoints waiting to be discovered.
But even if you only have one day, Chamonix delivers something unforgettable.
Standing beneath Mont Blanc, surrounded by glaciers and towering peaks, you gain a new appreciation for the sheer scale and beauty of the Alps.
