Spending a few days in Lake Como had always been on our list, and during our month-long journey through Italy we finally made time for it…4 dreamy days in Como to wrap up our travels. Previous trips to Italy, we spend just a day in Como as a day trip from Milan and we finally were able to get to Bellagio and other villages around lake Como.
While we based ourselves in Como town for convenience, the magic of Lake Como unfolded as we traveled by boat to villages like Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and Tremezzo, each offering postcard-perfect views, elegant villas, and memorable meals.
Next time, I think I’d love to base in Bellagio or Varenna for the slower pace and iconic lake views, but staying in Como was perfect for this first trip. Plus we were here for a friend’s daughter’s wedding which was held at Villa Gino, 15 minutes from Como by car.
WHAT IS IN THIS POST
The Perfect 4-Day Lake Como Itinerary: Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo & Como
First things first, how to get to Lake Como… we had a car and were driving to Como after spending a few days in Emilia Romagna.
As this was not our first trip to Como, we knew a little bit about the issues around driving and but still decided to drive. I would suggest against it. You really don’t need a car to visit the villa and villages around lake Como.
How to Get to Lake Como
- By Train: From Milan Centrale, it’s under 1 hour to Como San Giovanni station.
- By Car: The scenic drive takes about an hour from Milan, but parking in villages can be tricky. Traffic is terrible on the narrow roads around the lake.
- By Ferry/Boat: Public ferries connect all the main villages, and private boat taxis are a splurge worth considering if you want flexibility.
Tip: Book your ferry tickets in advance or book villa tours that include the ferry. I didn’t. I had to wake up early, queue up at the ferry ticket booth to get the tickets and they were sold out for the ones we wanted. We were lucky to get a fast ferry to Bellagio. From there we took another ferry to Varenna.
You can get to Bellagio by car but ferry is more efficient. There is a direct train to Varenna on Lake Como, from Milan Central that gets you into town in an hour.
Our 4-Day Lake Como Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Como
Arrive in Como early and settle into your hotel before exploring the elegant lakeside town. Spend the afternoon wandering the historic center, visiting the magnificent Como Cathedral (Duomo), browsing the boutiques along the charming cobblestone streets, and stopping for a leisurely coffee in one of the piazzas. If time allows, ride the funicular to Brunate for sweeping views over Lake Como and the surrounding Alps.
That evening, enjoy dinner at one on the many of Como’s classic restaurants known for its handmade pasta and fresh lake fish.
We stayed in an Airbnb and met up with friends who had traveled from around the world for the wedding celebrations, making it the perfect start to our Lake Como adventure.
Day 2: Tremezzo & Villa del Balbianello
Start the day with an early ferry to Tremezzo on the western shore of Lake Como. This elegant lakeside village is home to some of the lake’s most spectacular villas, gardens, and luxury hotels.
The highlight of the day is Villa del Balbianello in nearby Lenno. Famous for its appearances in Casino Royale and Star Wars, the villa’s perfectly manicured terraces, dramatic staircases, and panoramic lake views make it one of the most beautiful places on Lake Como. Reserve tickets in advance if you plan to tour the interiors, as they often sell out during the summer months.

The gardens were lovely and the view of the villa from the lake was just as pretty!
You can hire a private boat from Tremezzo to Villa del Balbianello or take one of the shuttle boats from Lenno, which operates during the summer.
Afterward, stroll through Tremezzo and, if time permits, visit Villa Carlotta, renowned for its impressive botanical gardens and art collection. Just down the road sits Villa Balbiano, the magnificent estate featured in House of Gucci. Although it is generally not open to the public, it is beautiful to admire from the lake.
For lunch, we treated ourselves to a meal on the terrace at the iconic Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Overlooking Bellagio across the water, the hotel offers one of the most spectacular dining settings on Lake Como. Enjoy fresh Italian cuisine while taking in uninterrupted views of the lake, the floating pool, and the surrounding mountains.
If staying in Tremezzo, stop by Cantina Follie, a cozy family-run wine bar known for its local cheeses, cured meats, homemade pasta, and wines from the nearby Valtellina region.
Or make it back to Como for dinner. Make sure to check the boat schedule.
Day 3: Bellagio & Varenna by Boat
Start early and catch one of the first ferries across the lake before the crowds arrive. One of the best parts of visiting Lake Como is simply being on the water, passing grand villas, colorful villages, and the dramatic mountain backdrop.
Begin in Bellagio, often called the “Pearl of Lake Como.” Wander its picturesque cobblestone streets, browse the elegant boutiques, and admire the beautiful waterfront before visiting the lovely Villa Melzi Gardens. The peaceful gardens, lined with sculptures, exotic trees, and blooming flowers, are among the prettiest on the lake.
From Bellagio, you can hop on a short ferry to Varenna, one of Lake Como’s most charming villages. Stroll along the romantic Passeggiata degli Innamorati lakeside walkway before visiting Villa Monastero. Its spectacular botanical gardens stretch for nearly a mile along the lake, with cypress trees, flowering terraces, statues, and unforgettable mountain views. It’s one of our favorite gardens anywhere in Italy.
Enjoy lunch at Il Cavatappi, a cozy trattoria tucked into Varenna’s historic center, or opt for snacks and drinks at Bar Molo with stunning views of Varenna before returning to Como.
If staying in Bellagio, have dinner at Ristorante Bilacus. Dining beneath the wisteria-covered terrace was the perfect way to end the day.
Day 4: Brunch at Villa d’Este & Cernobbio
Spend your final morning in elegant Cernobbio, one of the most refined villages on Lake Como. Begin with a leisurely brunch at the legendary Villa d’Este, one of Italy’s most iconic grand hotels. Dining on the lakeside terrace with views of the immaculate gardens and private marina is a memorable way to end your stay on Lake Como.
After brunch, explore the charming streets of Cernobbio before browsing the local boutiques. Lake Como has been famous for its silk production for centuries, and Cernobbio is one of the best places to shop for beautifully crafted silk scarves, ties, and accessories. Many shops carry pieces made from locally woven Como silk, making them wonderful souvenirs to bring home.
If you have extra time, Menaggio makes an excellent optional stop. Its relaxed waterfront promenade, historic piazzas, and slower pace offer a quieter alternative to Bellagio and Varenna before returning to Como for your onward journey.
Optional Day 5: Menaggio & Scenic Drives
Slow things down with a visit to Menaggio, a relaxed lakeside town known for its beautiful promenade and quieter atmosphere. Spend the morning wandering through the historic center before exploring some of the scenic roads that wind above the lake through charming villages, olive groves, and hillside viewpoints.
If time permits stop for lunch at La Trattoria Costantin, where the local specialty, risotto al pesce persico (risotto with lake perch), is a must-try before heading back to Como.
Outside Suburbia Tip: If your budget allows, spend three nights in Como for easy sightseeing and transportation, then finish with one unforgettable night at Grand Hotel Tremezzo or Villa d’Este.
Waking up on the lake before the crowds arrive is one of the most magical experiences on Lake Como and a wonderful way to end your trip. This split stay gives you the convenience of Como with the luxury of experiencing one of the lake’s iconic grand hotels.

Thing to do in Lake Como | Worth the Splurge
Lake Como has long been a playground for royalty, celebrities, and discerning travelers. While there are plenty of ways to enjoy the lake on a budget, a few special experiences are absolutely worth the extra expense.
Spend One Night in a Grand Hotel
If your budget allows, consider ending your trip with one night at Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa d’Este, or Passalacqua. Waking up before the crowds arrive, enjoying breakfast on the lake, and experiencing these legendary properties after the day visitors have left is something truly special.
Brunch at Villa d’Este
Villa d’Este has welcomed guests for more than 150 years and remains one of Italy’s most iconic luxury hotels. Sitting on the lakeside terrace with a cappuccino and brunch while overlooking the beautifully manicured gardens feels wonderfully indulgent and is one of our favorite memories from Lake Como.
Lunch at Grand Hotel Tremezzo
Even if you’re not staying here, lunch on the terrace at Grand Hotel Tremezzo is an experience you’ll remember long after your trip. The views across the lake to Bellagio are spectacular, the service is impeccable, and it’s one of the best places to soak in the glamour that Lake Como is known for.
Take a Private Wooden Boat Tour
While the public ferries are an excellent way to explore, nothing compares to seeing Lake Como from a classic wooden Riva boat. Book a private tour and cruise past elegant villas, hidden gardens, and celebrity homes that offers a completely different perspective of the lake. Sunset cruises are especially magical.
Aperitivo by the Water
Before dinner, find a lakeside terrace and enjoy an aperitivo while watching the ferries and vintage wooden boats drift across the lake. Whether it’s an Aperol Spritz, a glass of Franciacorta, or simply sparkling water with a view, slowing down to enjoy the atmosphere is one of the true luxuries of Lake Como.
Shop for Como Silk
Lake Como has been producing world-renowned silk for centuries, and a handcrafted silk scarf or tie makes a timeless souvenir. You’ll find beautiful boutiques throughout Como and Cernobbio selling elegant pieces made with locally woven silk that are both practical and uniquely tied to the region.

A little planning goes a long way on Lake Como, especially if you’re visiting between May and September when the lake is at its busiest. These tips will help you make the most of your time.
Take the First Ferry of the Day
One of the best decisions we made was starting our days early. The first ferries are quieter, the villages are peaceful, and you’ll have places like Bellagio and Varenna almost to yourself before the day-trippers arrive from Milan. The morning light also makes for beautiful photos across the lake.
Download Ferry Schedules
While ferries run frequently, schedules vary by season. Download the timetable or save it to your phone before heading out, especially if you’re planning to visit multiple towns in one day. Missing the last ferry can mean a long taxi ride around the lake.
Reserve Villa del Balbianello in Advance
Villa del Balbianello is one of the most popular attractions on Lake Como, and tickets for both the gardens and villa interiors often sell out weeks ahead during peak season. If it’s on your must-see list, book your visit before you arrive.

Wear Comfortable Shoes
The villages may look flat from the water, but Bellagio and Varenna are built on steep hills with plenty of stone staircases and uneven cobblestone streets. Comfortable walking shoes will make exploring much more enjoyable.
Pack Layers
Even during the summer, mornings and evenings on the lake can feel cool, especially while riding the ferry. A lightweight sweater or jacket is usually all you’ll need.
Make Restaurant Reservations
Some of Lake Como’s most popular restaurants and hotel terraces fill up well in advance, particularly during summer weekends. If you’re hoping to dine at Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa d’Este, or one of Bellagio’s highly rated restaurants, make reservations several weeks before your trip.
Leave Time to Slow Down
One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is trying to squeeze every village into one day. Lake Como is best experienced at a slower pace. Enjoy a long lunch overlooking the water, linger in the gardens, stop for an afternoon gelato, and take time to simply watch the boats glide across the lake. Those unhurried moments often become the most memorable.

- Varenna: Quieter, romantic, and perfect for couples.
- Tremezzo: Elegant, with iconic villas and the luxury Grand Hotel Tremezzo.
- Menaggio: Relaxed and family-friendly, with easy access by road or ferry.
We chose Como town this time for the convenience of trains and ferries, but next trip I’d love to stay in Bellagio or Varenna to fully soak up the lake’s charm.

If it’s your first visit, I recommend staying in Como. It has the largest selection of hotels and restaurants, excellent ferry connections, and direct train service from Milan, making arrival and departure incredibly easy.

Surrounded by botanic gardens and on the shores of Lake Como, the hotel is part of R Collection Hotels is lovely choice if you want to see Varenna with the day tripping crowds.
Casa Du Lac in Varenna has many rooms withe views on to the lake and Villa Rêverie (near Varenna) and is another great choice.

Lake Como was the perfect finale to our month in Italy. Between its glittering water, pastel-hued villages, iconic villas like Villa del Balbianello, Villa Balbiano, and a wedding at Villa Gino, unforgettable meals, it felt like stepping into a dream. Whether you choose to base in Como or one of the smaller villages, 4 days in Lake Como offers the perfect balance of relaxation, exploration, and Italian elegance.
Final Thoughts
After several days exploring Lake Como, what stayed with me wasn’t just the famous villas or luxurious hotels. It was slowing down enough to enjoy a long lakeside lunch, watching ferries glide across the water, wandering through fragrant gardens, and lingering over gelato in Bellagio’s quiet streets. Lake Como is one of those places that reminds you that travel isn’t about checking sights off a list. It’s about savoring beautiful moments, and this corner of Italy makes that incredibly easy…
