When we first started planning our Norway adventure, we quickly realized that two weeks wasn’t nearly enough to see everything this spectacular country has to offer. Towering mountains plunge into deep blue fjords, colorful fishing villages dot the coastline, and every drive seems more breathtaking than the last.
After researching countless routes, we settled on an itinerary that perfectly balanced Norway’s dramatic landscapes with charming cities, unforgettable hikes, and scenic ferry rides. Starting in Oslo, we flew north to the Lofoten Islands before slowly making our way south through some of Norway’s most iconic fjord country, ending in vibrant Bergen.
If you’re visiting Norway for the first time, this route gives you a wonderful taste of everything… from Arctic beaches and rugged peaks to UNESCO-listed fjords and colorful waterfronts.
I coundn’t find a way to fit Tromso into our Norway itinerary. We might have to plan a future trip to Tromsø, may be to see the northern lights!

Why This Route Works
Rather than trying to see every corner of Norway, we chose a route that combines three of the country’s most iconic experiences: the dramatic Arctic landscapes of the Lofoten Islands, the spectacular fjords of western Norway, and the charming waterfront city of Bergen.
By flying north to Lofoten and then driving south through fjord country, we avoid long backtracking while experiencing some of Norway’s most scenic roads. After a quick stop in Ålesund, we head inland to Flåm, home to one of the world’s most scenic train journeys and the breathtaking Nærøyfjord, giving us a wonderful mix of mountain scenery, fjords, waterfalls, and unforgettable rail travel.
Day 1: Start in Oslo
Start with a leisurely day exploring Oslo. Don’t miss the Opera House designed to look like a glacier and blends harmoniously with the waterfront location.

Days 2–7: Explore the Lofoten Islands
Our adventure begins in the Lofoten Islands, one of the most spectacular archipelagos in the world.
Base yourself in Svolvær before gradually working south through Henningsvær, Nusfjord, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, and finally Reine.
Highlights include:

- Uttakleiv Beach
- Nusfjord

Recommended hikes include:

Don’t miss kayaking, RIB safaris, fresh Arctic cod, cinnamon rolls from local bakeries, and some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets.
Day 8: Fly South to Trondheim
Return your rental car and fly from Leknes or Svolvær to Trondheim.
- Explore the colorful riverside warehouses along the Nidelva River.
- Walk across the historic Old Town Bridge for one of Trondheim’s most iconic views.
- Visit the magnificent Nidaros Cathedral, Norway’s national sanctuary and the world’s northernmost Gothic cathedral.
- If time permits, head up to Kristiansten Fortress for panoramic views over the city and fjord.
- Stroll through the charming neighborhood of Bakklandet, known for its colorful wooden houses, cozy cafés, and boutique shops. Stop for coffee and a cinnamon bun before continuing your scenic drive south.
Pick up another rental car and drive toward Molde, preparing for Norway’s legendary scenic roads.
Day 9: Atlantic Ocean Road & Trollstigen
Today is one of the highlights of the trip.
Drive the Atlantic Ocean Road before continuing toward Trollstigen’s famous hairpin bends and waterfalls.
If conditions allow, continue to Geiranger.
Day 10: Geirangerfjord to Flåm
After an early morning exploring Geirangerfjord, continue south through Norway’s spectacular mountain landscapes toward Flåm.
This drive is packed with waterfalls, winding mountain roads, glaciers, and postcard-perfect valleys. While it’s one of the longer driving days of the itinerary, the scenery is so spectacular that the journey becomes part of the adventure.
Depending on timing, stop at scenic viewpoints, charming villages, and roadside waterfalls before arriving in Flåm for the evening.
To do: Evening cruise on one of Norway’s most famous fjords.
Visit viewpoints including:
- Flydalsjuvet
- Ørnesvingen
- Dalsnibba Skywalk
Day 11: Flåm Railway & Nærøyfjord
Today is one of the highlights of the entire trip.
Start your morning aboard the famous Flåm Railway, widely regarded as one of the world’s most scenic train journeys. Climbing from the shores of the Aurlandsfjord into the mountains, the train passes waterfalls, deep ravines, lush forests, and dramatic cliffs, offering spectacular views around every bend.
After returning to Flåm, experience another Norwegian icon—a cruise through the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord. Surrounded by towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, and tiny farms clinging to the cliffs, it’s one of the narrowest and most beautiful fjords in the world.
If time allows, drive to the spectacular Stegastein Viewpoint for panoramic views over the Aurlandsfjord before continuing to Bergen.
Days 12-13: Bergen
After several days exploring Norway’s mountains and fjords, Bergen offers the perfect change of pace.
Spend two relaxed days wandering the colorful Bryggen Wharf, riding the Fløibanen Funicular to Mount Fløyen, browsing the lively Fish Market, and enjoying fresh seafood at one of the city’s waterfront restaurants.
Bergen is also an excellent base for exploring nearby fjords, strolling charming neighborhoods, and soaking up Norway’s laid-back coastal atmosphere before heading home.
Spend two days exploring:
- Bryggen Wharf
- Fløibanen Funicular
- Fish Market
- Mount Fløyen
- Fjord cruises
- Coffee shops and bakeries
Bergen is also a fantastic place to slow down after several days of driving.
Day 14: Oslo
Fly back to Oslo for one final evening.
Checkout any things you missed on the first day in Oslo.
Then fly home with thousands of photos…and probably plans for a return visit.

Best Time to Visit Norway
For this itinerary, we recommend mid-August. Best time for visiting Norway is usually June-July.

- Fewer crowds than July
September offers beautiful fall colors and better chances of seeing the Northern Lights but shorter days and cooler weather.

- Book domestic flights early.
