{"id":1464,"date":"2017-12-30T15:25:30","date_gmt":"2017-12-30T21:25:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/?p=1464"},"modified":"2020-03-07T21:08:38","modified_gmt":"2020-03-08T03:08:38","slug":"travel-highlights-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/blog\/travel-highlights-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Highlights of 2017: Top Travel Moments Outside Suburbia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year just whizzed by, it feels like just a couple of months ago that I was writing about our Travel Highlights of 2016!\u00a0 With Miss S starting college this year and D playing for his school team, we found ourselves jugging different responsibilities and emotions.\u00a0 We started the year with a trip to catch the spring training baseball games in Scottsdale.\u00a0 Did a lovely but long road trip along the Austrian and Swiss Alps in summer, did a quick fall trip to Napa and San Francisco to get the girl situated in her college in Fall.\u00a0 While we hoped to get to Bali this year, due the Mount Aguang acting up, we changed plans and spent our time in Japan.\u00a0 We found fall colors, shrines, glimpses of Mt. Fuji from different angles (the one from the plane still tops my list) and even snow in Japan during our winter break.<\/p>\n<p>Was excited to have one of my articles published in <a href=\"http:\/\/Personal goal - Lonelyplanet\u00a0 https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/09\/lp-pathfinders-top-posts-from-september-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LonelyPlanet<\/a> this year along with a few in Plano Magazine.\u00a0 We were invited to Visit Vail on a media trip for the <a href=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/north-america\/summer-in-vail-an-epic-adventure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Summer in Vail<\/a> campaign and fell in love with the Rocky sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We spent a week in March\u00a0in the foothills of Pinnacle Peak, amid towering saguaro cacti and other beautiful cacti in Scottsdale.\u00a0 While the boys went off to watch Spring training baseball games, we hung out in the desert hued adobe style casitas of <a href=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/north-america\/four-seasons-scottsdale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale<\/a>\u00a0and wandering around the beautiful desert grounds and enjoying the pool, made into town for <a href=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/reviews\/food\/high-tea-at-the-arizona-biltmore\/\">afternoon tea at Biltmore.<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0We left Phoenix area and headed to <a href=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/north-america\/united-states\/sedona-vortex-hikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sedona<\/a> to slow down and enjoy some time in nature \u2013 to go a few tranquil hikes, watch crimson sunsets and recharge. We stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando and enjoyed the rides in<a href=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/north-america\/united-states\/pandora-at-disneys-animal-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Pandora at the Animal Kingdom<\/a> and the water slides and the pools in the resort the most.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8092\" src=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Vail-os7-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking with Llamas in Vail\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was fun to watch the gondolas go up the slopes with a coffee in hand, we truly had the best view in town at Manor Vail Lodge. We took a Llama to lunch one day \u2013 not one but two of them actually with Paul our guide from Paragon Guides, wrapped up the evening with at concert at\u00a0majestic Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater.\u00a0 We went up Vail mountains on a Scenic Gondola Ride to Epic Discovery &#8211; there were are ziplines, alpine coasters, adventures courses and more. Driving through the rolling vineyard covered hills reminded me of our trip to <a href=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/travel\/europe\/italy\/siena-and-san-gimignano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tuscany<\/a> several years ago. We were not too anxious to reenact scenes from the movie Lost in Translation but enjoyed our stay at Park Hyatt Tokyo.\u00a0While we were exploring shrines, looking for torii gates and eating all the sushi in <a href=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/travel\/asia\/japan-itinerary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japan<\/a>, I was secretly counting down to a day in the Japanese Alps.\u00a0 It was a long journey to get to these\u00a0distinctive houses often called the Japan\u2019s Snow Houses that were constructed like hands in prayer.\u00a0 This is about how the Buddhist monks hold their hands to pray. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses are also built like this to withstand the enormous amount of snow that falls there. It was extremely cold but visiting the\u00a0Historic Villages of <a href=\"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/photodiary\/shirakawa-go-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shirakawa-g\u014d<\/a> was a highlight of the trip.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_next_for_2018\"><\/span><strong>Whats next for 2018<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I have no places on my wishlist for 2018, just that we still get to travel together as a family.\u00a0 Juggling schedules are getting harder with every year &#8211;
