{"id":311,"date":"2015-06-23T01:05:50","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T06:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/Wordpress\/?p=311"},"modified":"2020-03-13T22:30:53","modified_gmt":"2020-03-14T03:30:53","slug":"harry-potter-alnwick-castle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/outsidesuburbia.com\/travel\/europe\/scotland\/harry-potter-alnwick-castle\/","title":{"rendered":"A visit to the Harry Potter Alnwick Castle and the Scottish Lowlands"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When we were in Scotland&nbsp;we did a spontaneous Scottish Lowlands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rabbies.com\/tour_scotland.asp\">tour with Rabbies<\/a> that took us through <strong>Alnwick castle<\/strong>, and the <strong>Scottish borders and lowlands and Northumberland, England. &nbsp;<\/strong>We stopped at Melrose for some coffee and pastry learned about the Melrose Abbey where Robert the Bruce&#8217;s and his heart lay buried. Still inhabited by the 12th Duke of Northumberland, Ralph Percy and his family, the castle had a \u2018homely\u2019 feel. The castle has been in the Percy family for 700 years and all their history, priceless paintings and furniture, books, journals, photographs, personal possessions are there for all to see, from legendary kings and queens of England to the present day.&nbsp;<strong>Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure castle<\/strong> has also taken starring roles in a number of film and television productions,&nbsp;featuring as <strong>Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films<\/strong> and as a location for the show Downtown Abbey.&nbsp; When we were there we even caught a broom flying lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img Abbey<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the tour took us through<strong> Berwick-upon -Tweed<\/strong> for a quick drive around, where we stopped for photos at the <strong>River Tweed<\/strong> on the way, which has changed hands between Scotland and England an incredible 13 times!&nbsp;On the way back to Edinburgh&nbsp;we sat&nbsp;back and listened to the&nbsp;story about <strong>Mary Queen of Scots<\/strong>. &nbsp;We don&#8217;t do very many tours, we are more DIY exploring kinda family where we like to take our time at the sights and the tour with <strong>Rabbie&#8217;s<\/strong> was small, personal and we never felt rushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\"
