and Easy Hikes in Maroon Bells, Colorado"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With its snow striped mountaintops surrounded by golden aspens, Maroon Bells is perhaps the most photographed mountain in the Rockies.\u00a0 Visiting the Maroon Bells had been on my wishlist for a while and on a recent college reunion trip, I convinced my friends to make the 2 plus hour drive from Breckenridge to Aspen.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t really take a lot of convincing &#8211; I just had to forward a few photos of the very photogenic Bells and they were on board and ready to tackle some <strong>short and id=\"Why_is_it_called_Maroon_Bells\"><\/span><strong>Why is it called Maroon Bells?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The red mudstone layers give the mountains their unique maroon coloring and its name.\u00a0 When the light is right, the peaks reflect in the lake, and this image is on prints and postcards for sale at most gift shops in Colorado.\u00a0 10 miles from Aspen up Maroon Creek Road, the Maroon Bells put on quite a show in Fall, when the aspen groves turn shades of yellow and gold.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many visitors come to<strong> <\/strong>Aspen to take pictures<strong>, sunrise is a popular time when the rising sun hits the east-facing peaks<\/strong>. According to the US Forest Service, the mountains received their distinctive maroon coloring from the weathering of hematite, an iron-bearing mineral, while Maroon Lake occupies a basin that was sculpted by Ice-Age glaciers.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glaciers cut valleys and lakes, like Maroon Lake and Crater Lake. The Maroon Bells are considered Colorado\u00a0<strong><em>Fourteeners<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>with North Maroon at 14,014\u2032 and the summit of South Maroon Peak at 14,156\u2032. They are called \u201cthe bells\u201d because the shape of the mountains resembles church bells. The surrounding Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness area was one of the first US Wilderness areas established in 1964.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img Hiking at the relatively easy trails is the best way to enjoy them. Here are three short and easy hiking trails at Maroon Bells with rewarding views. Elevation: 9,500 ft. &#8211; 10,000 ft.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This easy 1-mile round-trip trek starts at the parking area and follows the circumference of the lake.\u00a0The trail follows the lake to the far side and meanders along the creek flowing into the lake.\u00a0 This easy to do trail is very scenic and is a great place for pictures and picnics.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perfect for families with little kids. Plan to come early if you want to see the reflection of the Bells in the lake.\u00a0 It gets pretty crowded during peak season! It was my favorite and we stopped every few minutes for photos!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Maroon_Creek_Trail\"><\/span><strong>Maroon Creek Trail<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start at the outlet of Maroon Lake and travel along Maroon Creek to encounter alpine meadows, aspen forests and rocky slopes. This <strong>3.2-mile one-way trail<\/strong> is an excellent place to spot wildlife such as mule deer, red fox, bighorn sheep, porcupines and a variety of birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crater_Lake_Trail\"><\/span><strong>Crater Lake Trail<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This <strong>3.6-mile round-trip trail<\/strong> rewards hikers with breathtaking vistas of Aspen woodlands and Crater Lake. Start at the Maroon Bells Kiosk from Maroon Lake Trail and be prepared for a steep and rocky ascent, cooler temperatures.\u00a0The Maroon-Snowmass Trail climbs through the Aspens to the lake.\u00a0 The left trail or the scenic trail follows a river and crosses two bridges, then climbs steeply to meet with the Maroon-Snowmass Trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trail is relatively easy but a little rocky and with all the elevation changes it feels a lot longer than the 3.8 miles. It is not as scenic as the Maroon Lake trail since most of the time you are looking behind to see the Bells. If you are short on time I would recommend sticking to the Maroon Lake Scenic Trail. through Glenwood Springs.&nbsp; It is a shorter drive if you coming from <strong>Aspen<\/strong> and that is where we stopped for lunch before heading back.&nbsp; Another beautiful Ski town in <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.radfamilytravel.com\/home\/things-to-do-aspen-snowmass-colorado-summer\" target=\"_blank\">Aspen has lots of things to do during summer<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were visiting on a Friday in May and were able to drive all the way to the parking lot at the Maroon Bells Trailhead.&nbsp; Because the natural landmark is so popular, there is restricted access to the area during the popular summer and fall months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Autumn is&nbsp;an especially beautiful time to visit when the Maroon Bells are cradled by golden-hued aspen groves. It is a popular spot for leaf peepers and the best way to see the Maroon Bells is to take the public bus operated by the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) and visit mid-week when there are fewer crowds. You still have to pay the access fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From about mid-June until early October,<\/strong>&nbsp;you can drive Maroon Creek road to the Maroon Bells trailhead&nbsp;<strong>before<\/strong>&nbsp;8 am and&nbsp;<strong>after<\/strong>&nbsp;5 pm. There is a $10 fee for driving the road, which\u2013especially in Autumn\u2013is one of the more beautiful drives in the country.&nbsp;<strong>From 8 am to 5 pm, visitors must take a 10-15-minute shuttle bus ride to the trailhead from the Maroon Bell parking lot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Early October to Mid-November:<\/strong>&nbsp;You can drive Maroon Creek road to the trailhead any day and any time of the week. Again, the access fee applies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maroon Bells During the Winter Months:<\/strong>&nbsp;Maroon Creek road is closed during the winter months, beginning in mid-November.
